Behind The Mask

With Kelly Hrudey

There's been a flurry of activity preceding opening night in the RSHL. Some teams are trying to add that final piece to push them over the hump. Others are trying to matchup with division rivals, while some are looking to rebuild and add future assets to their respective teams. It should be an interesting season. So without further ado...

With the additions of Matt Duchesne and Pierre-Luc Dubois, it appears the Habs are willing to gamble on these two players to help them now and in the future. Perennial playoff contenders, Montreal look ready to make life miserable for opponents in the east. One of those teams will be the Bruins. Currently in rebuild form, it appears they'll be hard pressed for goals this year and against the Canadiens that's not a formula for success. On the bright side keep your eyes on Ilya Sorokin.

The Leafs were an overtime goal away from advancing to the final and look to improve on that result. They've added veteran goaltender Mike Smith which should help in that regard. Radko Godas should solidify the defense and the added depth doesn't hurt either. Not to be outdone, the Lightning added to their own defense with Alex Goligoski and Mike Reilly. Backstopping them will be goaltender Jordan Binnington. Looking to gain back the form he had when he was considered one of the bright young stars of the league. A fresh start should help.

Sabres GM Josh Rose makes his unenviable RSHL debut against western powerhouse Edmonton. Not that Buffalo is lacking in talent. Braydon Point, Chris Kreider, and Ondrej Palat will test the Oilers. Not to mention the addition of John Tavares and this should be must see tv. Edmonton are on the verge of something special. Now if they could just get over Vancouver. I expect big things from the Oilers again this year.

Quebec look to stand pat and have been quiet in the off season. Coming off a good year I'm hoping GM Parkin Liu doesn't become complacent. We'll see. The Sharks on the other hand have been tinkering with the lineup and again look to be a formidable force yet again. Steve Stamkos was an incredible addition. Barring injury and a bit of lack of depth, there's no denying San Jose will be at the top of the league again.

The Panthers are coming off their best season ever and look to build off that. New acquisitions Kristopher Letang, Blake Wheeler and Tomas Tartar are intriguing and given the roster it's probable they'll be atop the east. The Islanders needless to say will be doing everything in their power to topple Tampa Bay from their lofty heights. You know what? I believe they can. From top to bottom the roster looks great. GM Nicoletti has done very well building up his club and they look ready to contend. I have a soft spot for the Isles from my past association with the NHL club and now it appears New York is ready for bigger and better things.
