Player performance (ie, invite the top players, then fill the slots to get enough team representation)

Yes

The top performers get invited to the All Star game. If your nice and select someone from every team, well there could be players who dong belong on the roster.

Yes, its good to take subjectivity out and allow the GM's of the league to decide

I didn't see any problems with this years allstar game or process. Your opening line to this survey states that there were "issues". According to whom. Things went like they should have in my opinion. Players that perform make the big game.
